Your Brain on Art - Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross
What’s in it
Did you know that art is not just a 'nice to have'?
That your brain and even your BODY react to art in such a way that it creates new neural pathways in your brain and even HEALS?
There's a story in Your Brain on Art about how heart transplant researchers are using MUSIC to move cells in heart tissue closer together. Honestly, it's mind blowing!
This book gives all sorts of insights on:
* How your brain takes in and processes information from all your senses (seriously, the book is worth reading even for this chapter alone!)
* How the brain creates memories from salient (memorable) events
* What an 'aesthetic triad' is and how we all perceive beauty differently (even if there are some universally accepted ideas about what is beautiful)
* How art impacts community, learning, mental health, your body
Why I like it
This is a seriously interesting book, with some key insights on the NEED and IMPACT of art
(And a key book to read for those policy makers cutting art subjects from the curriculum. The benefits case FOR the arts is in this book. But that is perhaps a topic for another day 🙄).
